Countdown to April 22: 11 more PA Dems endorsing Obama

2008 April 10

Despite the fact that Philly.com Philly.com is reporting that a bevy of Philadelphia and Pennsylvania elected officials are expected to announce endorsements this afternoon, Obama supporters seem to anticipate that the contest will go past the April 22 Pennsylvania primary: Cinco de Mayo fund-raisers are already in place on the Obama campaign site, and comments around the internet suggest that few expect Senator Clinton to concede regardless of the outcome despite strident calls from a vocal minority. Obama supporters, perhaps reflecting on how misleading polling data was in states such as New Hampshire and Minnesota, are generally not focused on the numbers.

Will the liberty bell ring on April 22, 2008?Six Philadelphia City Council members, three state Representatives, and state Senators Shirley Kitchen and Vincent Hughes, are expected to endorse Barack Obama for president at the Philadelphia City Hall in a single press conference this afternoon. The state’s governor and the mayor of Philadelphia are both Clinton backers, so the Democratic party in PA is clearly not of one mind on the presidential race. Both campaigns have significant efforts under way, from personal outreach efforts to expensive ad buys nearly saturating local broadcast media.

The Clinton campaign has revealed concern as the early double-digit lead in the polls has shrunk, with Wolfson now suggesting that Obama actually needs a big win in PA to maintain his front-runner status. One has to wonder how often and how far they can move the goalposts prior to deciding to throw in the towel. Obama’s numbers in most of the remaining primary states are quite good.
