Energy independence: a priority for the USA

2008 July 8

Senator Barack Obama has a Comprehensive Energy Plan to build a green, renewable energy economy now. In Pennsylvania an old steel mill has become the site of a wind turbine factory because the state made alternative energy a priority – the US needs to do that nationwide, too. Jobs are being created in Wisconsin because of investments in wind power – the US needs to do that nationwide, too.

new energy for America

To harness the potential of renewable energy we need not just the states and local activists, but leadership in Washington DC. That’s the sort of change Barack Obama represents: change that works for us now.

The Germans created 250,000 jobs in less time than it will take for John McCain and Big Oil to drill for oil offshore and bring it to market – the US needs to do that, too. Senator Obama has an extensive and detailed plan using technologies that work right now and investing in the research and technology to change our economy into one that respects the planet and its people. That’s the way to create new jobs and steward the earth for future generations; it’s a matter of national security to become energy independent, but it’s a matter of pride to leave the planet healthy for our children, and theirs.

Failing to invest in new energy and technologies means we’ll continue to fall behind in the competitive race for new jobs and manufacturing. That’s not energy independence. If we’re going to restore our place in the world we need to adjust our priorities – now.
